The Information Station

The heart of the Virginia State Parks Interpretive Information System is the unique software and extensive database developed by Imperial Multimedia of Baraboo, Wisconsin. This proprietary software is delivered to park guests via a custom made Information Station designed and fabricated by Imperial Multimedia. Nearly every state park in Virginia is home to these attractive structures that have been designed to reflect the historical and cultural context of the region.

The robust design developed for Virginia's state parks features a vandal-resistant enclosure constructed of corrosion resistant metals and finished in a high-performance, electrostatic powder-coat. Internally, the electronic hardware is a combination of technologies developed for aerospace, military applications, and the self-service banking industry. This attention to detail and durability, enables Imperial Multimedia to provide the only outdoor structure of this type to parks and historic sites worldwide.

Imperial Multimedia has developed the interactive software and hardware over nearly a decade of extensive research and development, as well as a three-year pilot program in Wisconsin's state parks. During the pilot program Imperial's Information Station was subjected to hundreds of thousands of interactions in extreme environmental conditions ranging from twenty-seven degrees below zero to over one hundred degrees outside temperature.

As you will see here, this project provides an unparalleled level of interpretive information never before experienced in a state park system. The goal of the Virginia State Interpretive Information System is to provide an unprecedented level of content about trails, park amenities, activities, area amenities, and other park information.

Installed in the spring of 2007, the outdoor stations are available 24-7, year-round and utilize a touch-screen interface. Users can quickly navigate through various tiers of information and even print a custom map of park trails. View an example video tour of a trail by clicking on the "Trail Tour" button in the Information Station Presentation above.
